About Alameda, California

Alameda is a charter city with an estimated population of 77,624 at the 2019 census. A former vacation destination for wealthy San Franciscans, Alameda was host to Neptune Beach, a major attraction similar to Coney Island in the early 1900s. Another fun fact is that the popsicle was invented in Alameda.

Today, the City has shaken off much of its military vibe. The island is a place for families who want to live in a small town that’s close to San Francisco, with bikeable streets, beaches, and a lively downtown shopping district.

One of the best things about Alameda is its spectacular water and city views. It also exudes character and charm — barbershops display old-fashioned barber poles on nearly every downtown block, and politely aggressive Girl Scouts sell Thin Mints. The city evokes a Norman Rockwell vision of America, but with more diversity.
