About Chico, California

Chico is the most populous city in Butte County, California with a population of 103,301 as of the 2019 U.S. Census. The City is the cultural, economic, and educational center of the northern Sacramento Valley and home to both California State University, Chico and Bidwell Park, the country’s 26th largest municipal park and the 13th largest municipally-owned park.

One of California’s most distinctive small cities, Chico blends the energy of a contemporary university town and a long history as a hub for the surrounding farming communities of Butte County. The nickname “City of Roses” appears on the Seal of the City of Chico. The city has been designated a Tree City USA for 31 years by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

As the birthplace of the pioneering Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Chico has played a big role in America’s craft beer revolution. The craft beer tradition is also upheld at The Commons Social Emporium near the city centre, which is owned by locals and features more than 20 beers and ciders on tap. Despite appearances, Chico does not live on beer alone and you’ll also find terrific dining, including the contemporary California cuisine at acclaimed chef Ann Leon’s Leon Bistro and the sushi at Japanese Blossoms.
