About El Cerrito, California
El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California and has a population of 23,549 according to the 2010 census.
The early village—named Rust for Wilhelm F. Rust, a German blacksmith and store owner who lived there—did not grow until a railroad terminal and harbour were established at neighboring Richmond in the early 1900s. The San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 resulted in a spurt of settlement in the city, and thereafter the city grew slowly with the economic development of the San Francisco Bay area, particularly neighboring Richmond.
People started to refer to the town as Rust and the name stuck until the town of 1500 people was incorporated as a city on 1917. The people did not care for the name of Rust so they changed it to El Cerrito, which means Little Hill in Spanish. Rust has been called the founder of this city and was well liked by the people and praised as an honest, trustworthy citizen and businessman.
