About Reedley, California

Reedley is a city situated along the Kings River, downstream from Centerville with a population of 24,194 at the 2010 census. Its chief economic source is agriculture, particularly fruit and vegetable cultivation and has thus dubbed itself “The World’s Fruit Basket”. Reedley is named for Thomas L. Reed, a Civil War veteran who gave half of his holdings to the city in 1888.

The City has more than a 100-year old tradition of tree, and vine fruit harvesting. It all started when the demand for the wheat dropped following the diminishing mining activities in the area. In 1913, the city embraced more improvements such as the development of cement sidewalks, and sewer systems. In the same year, the first steel water tower was built. To expand the population the settlement, farming families that emigrated from Europe were then recruited to settle in the fledgling town. This led to its incorporation in the same year. In 1988, Reedley celebrated the first 100 years of its multicultural heritage and the 75th anniversary of incorporation.

Reedley holds many festivals year round. The city of Reedley hosts the annual Reedley Fiesta in October, the Reedley Electrical Christmas Parade in December, the Reedley Street Faire in May, the Reedley Certified Farmers Market (Wednesday evening, in the summer), the Reedley Taste of the Town in September, and many other festivities to keep the residents and visitors busy and entertained.
