About Seaside, California

The City of Seaside (formerly East Monterey) is an ocean-side community that overlooks the beautiful Monterey Bay on the Central Coast of California, approximately 115 miles south of San Francisco. It is home to over 33,000 residents. The City houses the California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and the Monterey College of Law, which are located on the site of the former military base Fort Ord. Also on the site are the Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses, now open to the public and host to PGA Tour events, including the 2012 PGA Professional National Championship. The City is also the gateway to the Fort Ord National Monument Park, created on April 20, 2012.

Founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1954, this 10 square-mile city continues to grow while holding on to the rich values upon which it was established. Seaside’s convenient location gives residents and visitors an opportunity to experience all of the amenities that the Monterey Peninsula has to offer, from wine tasting to whale watching, and everything in between.

Scribble Hill (also known as “Message Mountain”) is part of Seaside’s popular culture. It is a large sand dune near the junction of Fremont Blvd and State Route 1, technically in Sand City, but adjacent to Seaside High School. People write messages on the dune with ice plant. It is a popular place for birthday messages, wedding proposals, and congratulation messages. Many people climb atop it to view fireworks on 4 July. It is also known as “The Big Dune” or “The Dune” or “The Big Sand Hill” or “The Sand Board”.
