About Avenal, California

Avenal is the fourth largest city in Kings County in area. The population was 13,496 on July 1, 2019, which includes inmates at the Avenal State Prison, the first prison actively solicited by a community in the state of California. Many of the remaining residents largely either work at the prison or in the agriculture industry. The prison provides approximately 1,000 jobs to residents.

The City of Avenal was named by Spanish soldiers and explorers. In Spanish, “avena” means oats, and “avenal” means oat field. This area was covered with wild oats, “waist high,” that looked like golden silk and covered the Kettleman Plains. Part of the Avenal’s proud agricultural heritage comes from the bountiful pistachio crop that grows in and around Avenal. In fact, the largest pistachio grower and processor, Wonderful Pistachios, employs a majority of Avenal’s agricultural labor force (both seasonally and full-time).

To celebrate the prominent role that pistachios play in the daily life of Avenal residents, the Avenal Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Avenal, established the annual Pistachio Festival, a four-day pistachio-themed fall event that brings the community together with a wide-range of family activities and attractions. This event is just one example of the many reasons why Avenal is the Pistachio Capital of the World.
